Orissa the land of Oriyas , earlier known as Kalinga , lies on the eastern coast of India . it is bounded by West Bengal on the north - east Chhattisgarh on the west , Andhra Pradesh on the south - east , Madhya Pradesh on the west and Bay of Bengal on the east . The state is drained by three great rivers the Mahanadi the Brahmani and the Baitarani and some lesser rivers all of which flow into the Bay of Bengal . The biggest and the most famous lake in Orissa is the Chilika Lake. This great historical land is known for the kalinga War which Ashoka (273-232 B.C) .But the spoils of war change the heat of Ashoka and turned him towards the compassionate teachings of Lord Buddha. Orissa is a Kaleidoscope of past splendors and contemporary expression.
