Champawat

Champawat is a hill district in the region of Kumaon. Champawat town is the district headquarters. The ancient capital of Katyuri and Chand Kumaon at a height of 1,615 m above sea level. Legends state that Lord Vishnu appears in his tortoise incarnation - Kurmavathar - here, and hence the name Kurmanchal. The ruins of the fort and temples along with scenic beauty are enjoyable here. A small fort and the temples of Baleshwar, Champadari, Ratneshwar and Durga adorn the city.The notable attractions near Champawat are Narsinh Danda, Hingla Devi, Hidimba-Ghatotkach Temple, Maneshwar and Karanteshwar.The nearest airport is at Pant Nagar. The convenient railhead is at Tanakpur, 75 km from Champawat town. Champawat is 331 kms from Dehradun.
