The Haridwar district, on the western part of Uttarakhand, has a rich ancient religious and cultural heritage. There are lush green forests and small ponds, which add to the scenic beauty of this holy land. There are plenty of water resources here as Haridwar is situated on the banks of the Ganges. The major tourist destinations are Rishikesh, Maya Devi temple, Pareshwar Mahadev Temple, Hari-Ki-Pairi, Swarg Niwas Temple, Mansa Devi temple, Daksha Mahadev temple, Piran Kaliar, Shravan Nath Math, Bhimgoda Kund, Pawan Dham, Shri Harihar Peeth Ashram and Shanti Kunj Ashram. The Kumbh Mela and Ardh Kumbh which attracts pilgrims from all over the world, occur after rotation of every twelve and six years respectively.Haridwar town is the district headquarters. Situated on the right bank of the sacred Ganga, it is associated with both Lord Siva and Lord Vishnu. It is among the seven sacred cities of India, and is also one of the four venues of the Kumbh Mela, held every twelve years. This religious centre which holds a promise of salvation to Hindu devotees, is also a centre of herbal medicine.
